The 50th edition of the Volta ao Algarve, the only Portuguese stage race on the UCI ProSeries circuit, will take place between 14 and 18 February 2024 and the peloton is beginning to take shape.

After being the best stage race in the entire ProSeries in 2023, according to data from the Procyclingstats, another top-level edition is expected.

Two WorldTeams have confirmed their presence, Germany’s Bora-hansgrohe and the Netherlands’ Team dsm-firmenich, two teams with a reputation to defend in the Portuguese race.

It will be Bora-hansgrohe’s eleventh consecutive participation in the Volta ao Algarve, a race in which they had their best performances in 2022, with Sergio Higuita’s victory at Alto do Malhão, and in 2020, when Maximilian Schachmann was second in the general classification.

Although it’s still too early to know the list of participants from each team, two Volta ao Algarve winners stand out in the German’s 28 cyclists squad, Daniel Felipe Martínez, first in 2023, and Primož Roglič, the best in 2017.

Team dsm-firmenich will be taking part in the Volta ao Algarve for the fifth time, having stood on the podium in all its previous appearances. In 2023 won the youth classification through Oscar Onley, a classification it had already won, still under the name of Team Sunweb, in 2018 through Sam Oomen. The following year Søren Kragh Andersen was second in the general classification, beaten only by the emerging Tadej Pogačar. In 2020 Cees Bol won the sprint finish in Tavira.
