Britain’s INEOS Grenadiers and Belgium’s Intermarché-Wanty, two teams with a regular presence in the Volta ao Algarve, will be present at the 51st edition of the Portuguese race on the UCI ProSeries circuit, between 19 and 23 February 2025.
INEOS Grenadiers has been competing in the Volta ao Algarve since the days when it was called Team Sky, and is one of the most successful projects on the roads of southern Portugal. They have won five editions of the Volta ao Algarve. Daniel Martínez prevailed in 2023, Michal Kwiatkowski won in 2018, Geraint Thomas was the best in 2015 and 2016 and Richie Porte was crowned in 2012.
The British team has won 12 stages in the Volta ao Algarve, a race in which they will be taking part for the 14th time. Thomas Pidcock’s most recent triumph was in 2023, at the top of Malhão, where Michal Kwiatkowsli (2018), Richie Porte (2012 and 2015), Sergio Henao (2013) and Stephen Cummings (2011) have also won for the British team. In the other high finish, Fóia, Ethan Hayter (2021) and Michal Kwiatkowski (2018) have already won. Geraint Thomas also won in Monchique (2015) and Lagoa (2018). In 2012, Bradley Wiggins won the time trial in Portimão and Edvald Boasson Hagen won the sprint in Lagoa.
Intermarché-Wanty will be taking part in the Volta ao Algarve for the 11th time. The Belgians have grown in the international peloton in parallel with the growth of the race. They started taking part when the team was still ProTeam and the race was 2.1, and they’ve continued since moving up to the WorldTour and the Volta ao Algarve was promoted to the ProSeries.
In 2024 Intermarché-Wanty achieved its first success in the Portuguese race. Gerben Thijssen won the first stage in Lagos and claimed the green points jersey at the end of five days of competition.
