Jonas Vingegaard confirmed for the Volta ao Algarve

Jonas Vingegaard, two-time winner of the Tour de France (2022 and 2023), has chosen the only Portuguese stage race on the UCI ProSeries circuit to start the 2025 season. His presence was confirmed by Team Visma | Lease a Bike, which won the team classification in 2024 and will once again be present at the Volta ao Algarve.

Jonas Vingegaard’s goal for 2025 is the most ambitious of all: to win the Tour de France. To achieve this, the Danish rider will begin his preparations for the season in Algarve, in what will also be his debut in Portugal. In Algarve, Vingegaard will be joined by Wout van Aert, who has also been confirmed by the Dutch team.

These are just two of the big stars expected in Algarve between February 19 and 23. The list is far from complete, but already includes names such as Primož Roglič (Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe), Julian Alaphilippe (Tudor Pro Cycling) and Geraint Thomas (INEOS Grenadiers), as well as, of course, the Portuguese João Almeida (UAE Team Emirates-XRG).

Visma, Lidl-Trek and Cofidis complete the luxury peloton for the Volta ao Algarve

The peloton for the 51st Volta ao Algarve is closed and will include 25 teams. The latest additions are Team Visma | Lease a Bike, Lidl-Trek and Cofidis, three WorldTour teams that join the 13 teams already announced and the nine Portuguese continental teams.

Team Visma | Lease a Bike, second in the 2024 UCI rankings, once again demonstrates that the best teams are keen to be present at the Volta ao Algarve. In 2025, the Dutch team will take part in the “Algarvia” for the 16th time, a race they won in 2017 with Primož Roglič, having finished on the podium on two other occasions – Grischa Niermann was second in 1998 and Jan Tratnik third in 2024. In addition to the overall victory and the two podiums, there are also seven stage victories, the last of which in 2024, when Wout van Aert was the fastest in the sprint finish in Tavira.

Lidl-Trek, meanwhile, will be taking part in the Volta ao Algarve for the ninth time in 2025. The team from the United States of America doesn’t have any podium finishes in the Algarve, although it came close in 2018, when Bauke Mollema was fourth. In 2016, Swiss Fabian Cancellara achieved the team’s greatest accomplishment in Algarve, winning a stage, the time trial, in Sagres.

Cofidis will be returning to Algarve, where they haven’t raced since 2022. However, it’s far from being a first, as the French team has made 15 appearances in the history of the race, having finished second on the overall podium on two occasions – Stuart O’Grady in 2005 and Sylvain Chavanel in 2008 – despite never having won a stage.

The Volta ao Algarve is a unique opportunity for Portuguese teams to compete in the same peloton as the top teams in the international peloton, something that will happen again in 2025. The nine continental teams registered in Portugal complete the 25-strong squad that will be on the start line for the 51st edition of the race.
