A debut, a comeback and a historic presence

The 51st Volta ao Algarve, from 19 to 23 February 2025, will be a race with many new features. Firstly, a new route, which will be announced in mid-December. But also in terms of the teams chosen, maintaining the high level of sport, but offering novelties to fans of the sport.

In this regard, the presence of a team that has never competed in the Volta ao Algarve before stands out. It’s Bahrain Victorious, a WorldTeam, which has the added attraction of having Portuguese rider Afonso Eulálio in its squad.

Barhrain Victorious, a team with top-class riders for stage races and classics, will be making its debut in our race, after being the first team to request an invitation to the event. This happened even before the 2024 Volta ao Algarve, when the line-up for that edition had already been finalised, demonstrating the international prestige of the only Portuguese race on the UCI ProSeries circuit.

Another novelty compared to last year will be the Belgian Lotto, the best ProTeam in the world rankings, occupying ninth place in the collective classification, ahead of most of the WorldTour blocs, a division it is a strong candidate to ascend at the end of the 2025 season.

After a four-year absence from the Algarve, Lotto is returning to the race for the 14th time. The Belgian team has a total of eight stage wins in the Volta ao Algarve. It started with Tom Steels’ victory in Portimão in 2005. The following year, Gert Steegmans won in the same city and in Faro. André Greipel went on to win three times, in Tavira in 2011 and 2017 and in Vilamoura in 2015. The team also celebrated twice in Albufeira, with Philippe Gilbert in 2011 and Gianni Meersman in 2012.

The third team we’re announcing today is also a ProTeam, from Spain, and will be competing in the Volta ao Algarve for the 15th consecutive year, making it one of the foreign teams with the most participations in the Portuguese race.

Among the riders that fans will be able to see representing Caja Rural-Seguros RGA is the Olympic track champion, Iúri Leitão, who will certainly be looking to discuss the stages that will be decided in the sprint.

These three teams join the four previously announced: Alpecin-Deceuninck, EF Education-EasyPost, Groupama-FDJ and Team dsm-firmenich PostNL.
