Alte’s “Estendal da Volta” Returns for the 2026 Volta ao Algarve

In the heart of the Serra do Caldeirão, amid carob trees, waterfalls, and whitewashed houses with traditional ornate chimneys, the small village of Alte reaffirms its status as one of the most charismatic spots of the Volta ao Algarve.

In 2026, the tradition continues with the return of the Estendal da Volta (the “Jersey Line”), featuring three passes of the peloton through the iconic bend on the EN124, right by the Germano BiciArte Café, on February 19th and 22nd.

It all started in 2016…

Alte is a land of poets, artists, and musicians—but also of cyclists. This community, passionate about the sport, knows that this specific curve in the municipality of Loulé is special. Every February, it transforms into an unlikely, colorful, and unique “laundry line,” where hundreds of jerseys from teams and fans are displayed as a sign of support for the Volta ao Algarve peloton.

Created in 2016, the Estendal da Volta was born from a simple promise made by Pedro Domingues — better known as Pedro Pirralho or simply Germano — to the race organizers. “When I opened the café, I promised that if the Volta passed by my door, I’d have a surprise waiting. That’s how the Estendal began. I haven’t stopped since,” he shares.

Last year, the display hit a new record with over 500 jerseys. Pedro continues to fold, wash, and store them, each carefully tagged for those who wish to reclaim them, though many remain for future editions, strengthening the living memory of this tradition.

For 2026, the goal is clear: to make the Estendal even bigger. All teams participating in the Volta ao Algarve are invited to provide a jersey for this collective installation.

Until February 12th, any cycling enthusiast can also drop off their jersey at the Germano BiciArte Café. By participating, they enter a draw to win a “Volta Hamper” filled with local products and special gifts.

During the race days, the venue will also host a Fun Zone, featuring a giant screen, background music, and a lively atmosphere bringing together the local community, visitors, and fans.

More than just decoration, the Estendal da Volta is a gesture of identity, hospitality, and passion for cycling—a tradition that transforms a mountain curve into one of the most iconic landmarks of the Volta ao Algarve.
