After a memorable 2025 season, João Almeida begins 2026 with renewed ambition and a clear objective: to fight for overall victory at the Volta ao Algarve. The Portuguese rider from UAE Emirates-XRG said this Monday, in the Algarve, that winning the race “would be an honour”, stressing that he will do everything possible to achieve that goal.
Speaking at a press conference held in Silves, the 27-year-old reflected very positively on last season, which he described as the best of his career. “It was without a doubt my best season ever, with many victories and wins in top-level races,” he said, adding that his preparation for 2026 has gone “smoothly, without setbacks or bad luck”, and with very encouraging sensations.
The runner-up of the 2025 edition said he feels physically strong and confident ahead of the start of the new season, highlighting the importance of the experience he has gained over the years. “I keep gaining confidence and that helps me make better decisions in the race. That experience ends up making the difference,” he explained.
João Almeida will open his season on 4 February at the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana, where he intends to challenge for victory, before returning to Portugal for the Volta ao Algarve, scheduled for 18 to 22 February.
Regarding the route of the 52nd edition, the rider highlighted the main new features, such as the ascent to Fóia from a different side and the individual time trial in Vilamoura, while also underlining the decisive importance of the Alto do Malhão stage. “It’s a very demanding race, with a very strong peloton. Last year I came close and didn’t manage it, but this year I’ll try,” he said.
Racing on home roads continues to be an extra source of motivation for the Portuguese rider. “The support of the fans clearly makes a difference. It gives us an extra boost, both when racing and in training. The promise is always the same: to give my best,” he concluded.
The 52nd Volta ao Algarve therefore promises to once again feature a highly competitive João Almeida, determined to leave his mark on Portugal’s leading race on the international calendar.
