The peloton for the 51st Volta ao Algarve is getting progressively closer to being complete. In 2025, fans, already accustomed to the presence of the world’s best cyclists in Algarve, will once again be able to follow closely two teams with a rich history in the competition: Soudal Quick-Step and Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe.
Soudal Quick-Step, the team of Remco Evenepoel, winner of the last edition and record holder for overall victories in the Volta ao Algarve, with three (2020, 2022 and 2024), along with Belmiro Silva, deserves to be highlighted. The Belgian team will be cycling in Algarve for the 19th time, participating consecutively since 2007, when it was Quickstep-Innergetic. In total, they have won 25 stages and six overall – in addition to Remco, they have won with Stijn Devolder (2008), Tony Martin (2013) and Michał Kwiatkowski (2014).
Among the riders already confirmed by Soudal Quick-Step for 2025, in addition to the aforementioned Remco, there are also three names who have already finished on the podium of Volta ao Algarve: Ethan Hayter (second in 2021, for INEOS Grenadiers), Maximilian Schachmann (second in 2020, for BORA-hansgrohe) and Ilan Van Wilder (third in 2023).
Also returning to Algarve is RedBull-BORA-hansgrohe. Despite their debut with a new sponsor, the German team has been competing in Volta ao Algarve since 2014, still under the name of Team NetApp-Endura, with Portuguese riders Tiago Machado and José Mendes. The team has already made 11 appearances and won three stages. In 2024, Daniel Martínez celebrated in Alto da Fóia and Alto do Malhão.
Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe has never won the overall classification, but it has two second place finishes in the history of Volta ao Algarve: Maximilian Schachmann (2020) and Daniel Martínez (2024). Martínez, in fact, participated in three occasions and was always on the podium – in addition to his second place in 2024, he was second in 2022 and won in 2023 with INEOS Grenadiers. Among the riders confirmed in the team for 2025, standouts include Primož Roglič, winner of Algarvia in 2017, for the then Team LottoNL-Jumbo, now Team Visma-Lease a Bike, and Jan Tratnik, third in 2024, also for Team Visma-Lease a Bike.
Roglič has already announced, during the Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe Media Day, that he will start the season at Volta ao Algarve. The Slovenian is one of the best cyclists in the world and will be one of the leading names among the participants in the next edition. Roglič’s impressive career includes four Vueltas a España, where he has won 15 stages, and an overall victory in the Giro d’Italia, among many other successes, for a total of 88 victories during his career as a professional.
